PERSONALITY DESCRIPTION: Garrus Vakarian has become quite used to living life in the shadow of others. First, he had to deal with his father's respected career in C-Sec while finding that he himself couldn't tolerate the way C-Sec operated. Once he was freed from having to fill his father's shoes, Garrus stepped into yet another shadow - that of the greatest man he's ever known, Commander Shepard. Some would say Garrus is too timid to step forward and take his chances in the limelight. Though he is indeed a humble turian, Garrus is not without his ambitious and desires to make something greater of himself - it's what got him out of C-Sec's webbing of red tape in the first place and what convinced him to attempt to clean up Omega. His pride, though, pays second fiddle to duty, a trait highly valued among turians. Garrus will let anyone make what use of him that he's worth if it helps the greater cause.
And people want to make use of Garrus, because he's a good turian to have around. The same sense of duty mentioned above makes him a hard worker, and his loyalty to someone whom he believes deserves it proves to be unwavering. Garrus can also be an enjoyable companion to those who have his loyalty. Joker has claimed that he has a "pole up his ass" to describe how Garrus takes a rather rigid, militaristic approach to most things, but Garrus does not possess the same blandly aloof personality as many turians who have come through C-Sec or military training. Of course, his idea of bonding at times may be a good round of rough hand-to-hand combat, spur-of-the-moment bottle-shooting competition, or military joke, a sure sign that he's a turian, but Garrus often expresses himself through genuine, if sometimes awkward, displays of emotion, whether they be affectionate or not. One of Garrus' most endearing traits, though, has to be his knack for the driest humor at the most opportune times and his quick grasp of banter with any race.
Garrus' moral views can be a tad complicated. No doubt, Garrus' tendency towards good ends where the good people end; thus, one can consider him to be very much an upstanding person. With criminals and the like, however, Garrus firmly believes in the old human adage "an eye for an eye." A temper and violent streak rear their ugly heads when it comes to those who put innocents in danger for their own gain or some sinister purpose. On Omega, Garrus had no problem visiting criminals personally and taking them out just as personally. When the moral decisions aren't as simple as help the innocent, ally with the good, and attack the bad, Garrus struggles. He admitted himself that he doesn't know what to do with the gray moral area, having always thought in black and white. With the Reapers basically on the doorstep, though, Garrus has carved out a view that what's greatest for the greatest number, even if it has to harm a few, may be the best course of action. If he was to tell the truth, though, he's still not quite sure.
HISTORY History: Garrus Vakarian's youth was half dealing with the prestige of his father's name and half living the typical life of a turian switching increments of time spent between Palaven and the Citadel. He would gain an intense interest in the workings of C-Sec's security systems from being around his father, and he thinks this is what made him so capable of spending hours in front of electronics in an effort to make them better. By the age of fifteen, Garrus was in military training like other turians, receiving praise for his marksmanship and grasp of engineer's training. Many expected him to immediately join his father at C-Sec once he graduated, he instead remained in the military for a few years, serving in an expedition ship as their top marksman.
Garrus was eventually elected as one out of nearly a thousand candidates to be trained in preparation for earning attention as a Council spectre. His father, though, had an issue with the spectres and their assumed lawlessness in dealing with situations and managed to get Garrus' name pulled from the list. Though surprised by the action, Garrus was never particularly bothered by it. It was, ultimately, just another way for him to recognize he had a by-the-book father, and he'd always have a set of regulations put on his own life. Garrus could find no further way to make use of himself on a ship, however. The call of C-Sec finally swayed him,, and Garrus left the military and joined the organization.
All he found once there was red tape. Garrus proved to be a top-notch C-Sec officer, but his superiors would always pick at his methods far too much for Garrus' tastes. Even when his superiors honored him by allowing him onto the case against Saren, a spectre suspected of having gone rogue, Garrus was blocked from pursuing evidence against him at every turn. He decides to leave C-Sec afterwards and instead join Commander Shepard, the human accusing Saren of treachery, in his bid to go after Saren.
Sparked by experiences on Virmire with the cloning facility during their pursuit of Saren, Garrus asked to have another chance to take down a salarian doctor who was doing some cloning of his own and who had escaped from Garrus before. Tracking the doctor down and using the victory as motivation, Garrus proved to be a key cog once they returned to the Citadel and had to fight Saren. They would kill Saren and the Reaper that joined him, Sovereign, with the Citadel sustaining massive damage.
Garrus believed he would put his name in the pool for spectre candidacy again, inspired by Shepard and having finally escaped his father's shadow. To prepare himself, he chose to remain on the crew, though he didn't approve of how the Normandy seemed to be brushed into open space to avoid the Citadel having to face the pressure of having the crew that defeated Saren on station. His disapproval would switch to outright anger after the Collectors attacked them. Garrus was nearly crushed by the Mako during the attack, but like many of the others he reached an escape pod before the whole ship was blown to hell. It was only later that Garrus learned that Shepard hadn't made it out, though he hadn't believed it. Fury hit him when he found that the Citadel wasn't going to mention what had truly happened to Shepard.
From there, Garrus realized that all he was going to find at the Citadel was a cage that would keep him, and the truth about Sovereign, locked in while everyone around him tried to maintain "normalcy" when he well knew normalcy was gone along with Shepard. Garrus bitterly turned in a resignation to C-Sec sometime after the mockery that was Shepard's funeral. Disagreements with his father ensued. Looking for an outlet, Garrus started after certain Citadel criminals on his own time, recalling many of their names from the last reports he received. One such targeted criminal, a smuggler, revealed to Garrus that the real place to find crime was on Omega. Without a regret or a word to his father, Garrus boarded the first ship that would take him to the infamous space station, the last of his C-Sec equipment and weaponry with him.
At best, Garrus' first days on Omega were useful but unimpressive. It wasn't until he met another turian by the name of Sidonis at the Afterlife nightclub that Garrus found his starting place for a crusade against crime. He and Sidonis began assembling the pieces for a team that was reminiscent of Shepard's own, with specialists in varying fields regardless of their backgrounds. Though Garrus was unsure about some of them, they proved to be a highly efficient and loyal team once war was declared against the criminals of Omega. And war they did wage, with the team regularly combating each and every major criminal organization on the station and succeeding greatly, even against sometimes incredible odds. For his part as their leader and as a deadly, unseen enemy from above that protected innocents, took the moniker of Archangel to conceal his true identity. Success perhaps made the team too eager to settle down, but Garrus convinced them to keep the pressure on until the station was crime-free. To this day, Garrus regrets pushing them.
The Blue Suns would get to Sidonis and, to save his own skin, he agreed to help them take out the rest of the squad. Garrus was distracted with a false mission while the rest of the squad came under attack, the majority of them dying in combat before Garrus returned and those remaining not lasting long. Garrus did get some measure of revenge - taking out the brother of a leader of the Eclipse, who had joined with the Blue Suns - but ultimately he was pushed back and worn thin. Calling his father to apologize to him and tell him of his failure, Garrus thought hope was lost until one specific "mercenary" in his scope caught his attention. Garrus managed to hold out until Commander Shepard and his squad reached him.
With Shepard's assistance, Garrus managed to survive and finish his fight against the mercenary groups of Omega. For the effort, though, he would take a direct hit from a gunship and be brought onto the Normandy SR-2 for medical attention. Though there was question as to whether he would live, Garrus was back on his feet in days, a destroyed portion of his face repaired in the Normandy's med bay. He didn't even have to be asked to join Shepard's pursuit of the Collectors.
The way his experience on Omega ended, though, continued to affect Garrus. Deciding he could only rest easy once Sidonis was done away with, Garrus filtered through his old contacts to receive word on the traitor and finally tracked him to the Citadel. The turian made a special request to Shepard to let him land and track Sidonis, planning on killing him. After tracking down and interrogating Harkin - who just so happened to be dealing solely in mercs - to learn Sidonis' whereabouts, Garrus tracked Sidonis down and planned to make the kill. He would be talked out of the action, though, and despite his anger at losing his opportunity for repayment, his conscience was nonetheless clear when he received word that Sidonis had turned himself in for the murder of the squad. Garrus also fully reconciled with his father before the Normandy hit the Omega-4 Relay to take on the Collectors at their base, a task that Garrus and the rest of the team were not likely to survive.
However, many of them would. Garrus was selected to lead the second squad into the Collector base, taking a few bullets for his effort, and their task ended in a victory when the human reaper was destroyed and they escaped before the base was destroyed. With their work done and the Reapers assumed to be closer than ever, especially when their near-arrival in the Batarian systems was revealed, Garrus promised Shepard that he would get the turians ready for the upcoming fight.
When Shepard was called back to earth to face trial for the actions he was forced to take in slowing the Reapers, Garrus returned to Palaven to convince his father and other turian leadership that the Reapers were on their way. They gave Garrus a "token" position as the leader of a "Reaper Task Force" and a ranking military adviser, allowing him to prepare Palaven's defenses for Reaper attack. He would soon find out, as the Reapers moved in to attack soon after Earth went dark, with Garrus on Menae, a moon of Palaven, to help coordinate with famous General Adrien Victus.
